Assignment 1

Multi-Camera Technique

How each kind of production works?

TV studio sitcom

TV studio sitcoms productions work by around the sets of a TV sitcom there will be a lot of cameras that will capture a lot of different angles for each scene on the sets. It is import for the viewers at home to not miss anything from the show that they are watching. We use multiple cameras in in TV sitcoms in order to record each area of the show so that when something happens then the viewers would be able to see it as it will have been picked up by one of the cameras. You could use one long shot to record the whole show, however the viewer would soon get bored of what they were watching as they are constantly seeing the same thing from the same angle. By using Multi cameras you can change the perspective and focus on where it is taking place and get a closer look at how the actors are acting.

This is an example of using multi-camera. There is 4 cameras set up to capture the scene from 4 different angle and perspectives.

An example of a TV studio sitcom that uses a multi-camera technique is Friends. Friends use multiple cameras to film each scene. They use the multi-camera technique so that they can make sure that they capture the show from every angle that the cameras are pointing at so that they make sure that miss anything on camera for the audience to see.

This image shows the the friends set with 3 cameras set up which shows them using the multi-camera technique. All of the cameras are aimed at different angles to capture different perspectives of the show.

The main roles that take place in the production team of a TV studio sitcom are the camera operators which operate each camera separately from different angles and perspectives of the show, the director who directs the cast and crew, boom operator which gets the audio and makes sure that it is clear and they can hear it, light operator which managers the lighting on the sets and the editor which edits all of the footage that was taken from all of the cameras and makes it into the show every episode.

The equipment that is needed to make a multi-camera  TV studio sitcom is 5 or 6 HD cameras, 5 or 6 boom poles with rifle microphones, long cables, headphones, tripods, monitors, lights.

The pros and cons for TV studio sitcom are:
Pros
You can shoot from different angle and use different shots to get different effects.
It will be easier to shoot the shows because you won't have to shoot one scene a lot of times just to get different angles since you will have multiple cameras which captures each scene from a lot of different angles from where you choose to put them all.

Cons
They will need a big studio to film in so that they can use multiple cameras and easily  move them around to shoot from different angles.
It will cost a lot for all of the equipment that you will need because you will need multiple amounts of things such as boom poles, rife mics, headphones cables and more instead of just one of each thing since you will be using the multi-camera technique.
You are more likely to get some of the crew or the equipment in the shots when you are filming because there will be a lot of cameras spread all around and it makes likely for them to be in the shot.

Sports coverage

Sports coverage productions use the multi-camera technique when doing sports coverage to make sure that the audiences don't miss any of the action. It is import for the viewers at home to not miss any action from the game. We use multiple cameras in order to record each area of the field so that if something unexpected was to happen then the viewers would be able to see it as it will have been picked up by one of the cameras. You could use one long shot to record the whole sporting event, however the viewer would soon get bored of what they were watching as they are constantly seeing the same thing. By using Multi cameras you can change the perspective and focus on where the action is taking place and audience and player reactions. Live sporting events are mostly cut live when they are broadcast because people want to see what is happening at the time, however it is sometimes cut afterwards to put into highlights for example on match of the day.

An example of sports coverage that uses a multi-camera technique is WWE. WWE us the multi-camera technique to film all the WWE shows they all live cut some off shows which are usually their big events like Wrestlemania and the Royal Rumble. When the WWE shows are being filmed using the multi-camera technique the camera operators are all over the arena shooting the show from different angles for example there is usually two camera operators at ringside getting close ups shoots and there is camera operators up in the stands getting long and wide angle shoots. Also at every WWE show and event there is always camera footage that goes straight onto the titan tron so that people in higher seats can get a clear view on the action while it is happening.

This image shows the cameraman that is at ring side when he is shooting the match. Also sometimes in WWE the camera operators get attacked by the wrestlers this image also shows this.

The pros and cons for sports coverage are:
Pros
When they live cut people watching at home can also watch the action while it is happening.
They are filmed with a live audience so that they can use their reactions in the show.
It will be easier to shoot the shows because you won't have to shoot one scene a lot of times just to get different angles since you will have multiple cameras which captures each scene from a lot of different angles from where you choose to put them all.

Cons
They will need a lot of space so that they can use multiple cameras and easily  move them around to shoot from different angles.
You are more likely to get some of the crew or the equipment in the shots when you are filming because there will be a lot of cameras spread all around and it makes likely for them to be in the shot.

The similarities between TV studio sitcom and sports coverage are that they both use the multi-camera technique. Some TV studio sitcoms also have live audiences as well as sports coverage an example of a TV studio sitcom that has a live audience and they use their reactions in the show like when they laugh at the jokes that happen in the show.

The differences between TV studio sitcom and sports coverage are that the sports coverage can do live cuts and the TV studio sitcoms can't do live cuts because TV studio sitcoms are not filmed not filmed live so they can't do live cut. For TV sports coverage they can use different types of cameras to get different angles and perspectives such as the sky camera which is up in the sky above the ground in football which get a birds eye view of the game.
